The Gunnison River begins high in the mountains near Grand Junction as a clear mountain stream. As it flows down into the valley, it widens into a shallow, rocky river, passing through Gunnison, Colorado. The Gunnison flows through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, cutting the sheer walls of the canyon. It is here, in the canyon, that some of Colorado's best Gold Medal Water is located. The portion of the river that flows from the Crystal reservoir to the confluence with the North Fork boasts the best trout habitat possible. Access is very limited and generally only possible by foot or on horseback.

During the 1930s through the late 1950s, the Gunnison was known as one of the greatest trout fisheries in the country. However, when the Blue Mesa, Marrow Point and Crystal Reservoir were constructed, the prestiege of this area declined. But, still today the river contains three times the biomass required to qualify for Gold Medal Status. This Gold Medal Water runs 26 miles, beginning at the upper boundary of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, flowing downstream to the confluence with the North Fork of the Gunnison. It is common to catch 16-25 inch Rainbow and Brown Trout over 5 pounds. The river is hard to access, requiring a steep hike to reach the water in the Black Canyon. The best time to fish is during June during the Stonefly hatch.

To keep this river at Gold Medal Status, there are a few regulations that all anglers must follow:

    • You must use artificial flies or lures. NO BAIT ALLOWED!
    • ALL Rainbow trout are CATCH AND RELEASE
    • Brown trout 12-16 inches must be returned to the water immediately
    • Bag and possession limit for brown trout is 4 fish, 12 inches or less OR 3 fish less than 12 inches and 1 fish 16 inches or longer.
    • A Colorado fishing license is required
