San Juan River

What You Should Know About Whitewater River Rafting In Colorado

The San Juan River originates on Southern Colorado's Continental Divide before it travels through southwest Colorado into the northwest corner of New Mexico and bending into Utah. This river is the perfect family adventure with small to moderate Class I-III rapids. The late spring and early summer is the best time to find whitewater, however the Montezuma Canyon offers a light float through Class I-II rapids when the river is lower during the late summer.

As you travel down the river, you will be able to see a historic abandoned railroad, ghost towns and old homesteads. Also along the river are Anasazi ruins that are not visible from any other point but the banks of the river. The river also runs through the San Juan National Forest and the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. These areas boast beautiful scenery and wildlife. The mixed cottonwood and pine forests are home to golden eagles, deer, elk, beavers and bears.

The International Rapid Rating Scale:

  • Class III: Intermediate. Rapids, moderate, irregular waves.
